A veteran NYPD cop became the ninth police officer to commit suicide this year when he shot himself in the head in his Queens home Wednesday evening — just a day after another NYPD officer killed himself in Yonkers, police sources told The Post.
The 56-year-old officer, who has worked for the department for more than 20 years, shot himself at his Laurelton home soon after 6 p.m., the sources said.
Medics responded and rushed him to North Shore University Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead, sources said.
“This is heartbreaking to see a family torn apart no matter the situation,” said Brenden Betts, 23, a neighbor who works for the Department of Transportation.
The tragic suicide comes just a day after off-duty officer Johnny Rios fatally shot himself at about 3 a.m. Tuesday in the home he shared with his fiancée and her children. READ MORE:
