US Army Black Hawk Goes Down Near Yemen

A U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopter crashed during a training exercise Friday evening.

Search and rescue efforts are underway for a missing U.S. service member in the wake of the latest U.S. military accident. Five other Americans were rescued immediately after the helicopter went down about 20 miles off the coast of Yemen, according to The Wall Street Journal, citing reports from U.S. Central Command.

The U.S. has been active in the area for more than two years supporting the Saudi-led coalition against the Houthi rebels that overthrew the legitimate Yemeni government.

The U.S. military has experienced a string of tragic and concerning crashes over the past couple of months, leading observers to speculate about the cause, suggesting everything from hacking to poor training. Some argue that the military was weakened during the past administration.

Friday’s crash marks the second Black Hawk helicopter crash in a month, as one went down off Hawaii earlier this month, killing five U.S. service members. The latest accident also follows a deadly collision at sea involving the Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS John S. McCain and an oil tanker more than three times its size.

Ten sailors lost their lives when the tanker slammed into the side of the American warship. Another seven sailors died two months ago when a massive merchant vessel crashed into the Arleigh Burke-class guided- missile destroyer USS Fitzgerald, punching a hole in the hull.

Last month, a U.S. Marine Corps KC-130T Hercules aircraft crashed in Mississipi, killing all 16 people on board, and another three Marines died when an  MV-22 Osprey went down off Australia earlier this month.

The military is investigating Friday’s Black Hawk crash.
