President Donald Trump will sign an executive order Tuesday afternoon to bring accountability and discipline to the permitting process for infrastructure projects, a move meant to cut red tape and ramp up new projects.
The order will establish a protocol of “one Federal decision” for major infrastructure projects, set a two-year goal for completion of the permitting process and create accountability for federal agencies involved in the permitting process, a White House spokesperson told The Daily Caller News Foundation.
Effectively, the administration is looking to streamline the process of approving and breaking ground on major infrastructure projects. The administration hopes that, in signing the order, it will help leverage the potential for large-scale investment from the private sector, which could, in turn, lower the financial burden on the federal government.
The president is slated to receive an update from his infrastructure team before he signs off on the order.
Trump launched “Infrastructure Week” at the White House in June, where he promised to streamline the federal approval for infrastructure projects. The president called the current system a “painfully slow, costly and time-consuming process.”
Trump has floated the idea of leveraging some $200 billion in government spending to fund $1 trillion worth of projects, including privatizing the air traffic control system and strengthening roads, bridges and waterways.
The president is scheduled to give a statement on his meeting with his team and the executive order Tuesday afternoon.
