Trump urged to issue White House invitation to NFL player who refused to kneel

Twitter users on Monday were calling on President Trump to invite Pittsburgh Steelers player Alejandro Villanueva to the White House, after Villanueva refused to stay in the locker room with his team during the national anthem at Sunday’s game, and stood by himself on the edge of the field with his hand over his heart.

Villanueva, a West Point graduate and former Army Ranger who had three tours in Afghanistan, abandoned his teammates who stayed in the locker room in order to show team solidarity on a weekend in which many players decided to stand for the anthem, and many others decided to take a knee.

The team spent 30 minutes talking about what to do during the national anthem, though some told ESPN they were surprised Villanueva, a starting left tackle, did his own thing. – READ MORE
