Trump Slams Corker For Incompetence Remark

President Donald Trump attacked Sen. Bob Corker of Tennessee by tweeting Friday the Republican constantly asks him whether or not he should run for re-election.

“Strange statement by Bob Corker considering that he is constantly asking me whether or not he should run again in ’18. Tennessee not happy!” the president tweeted early Friday.

Trump’s tweet is a direct response to Corker’s attacks last Friday in which he claimed the president isn’t stable or competent.

“The President has not yet been able to demonstrate the stability nor some of the competence that he needs to demonstrate in order to be successful,” Corker said last week in response to how Trump responded to the violence in Charlottesville. “He has not demonstrated that he understands what has made this nation great and what it is today, and he’s got to demonstrate the characteristics of a president who understands that.”

The matter was brought up in a White House press briefing Thursday, when Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders refused to respond to Corker’s statement.

“I think that’s a ridiculous and outrageous claim that doesn’t dignify a response from this podium,” Sanders said.

Corker has served in the Senate since 2007, and is up for re-election in 2018. He served as the mayor of Chattanooga for the four years prior to his statewide run. He has a strong electoral history. He earned 64 percent of the vote in the 2012 election against Democrat Mark Clayton, increasing heavily from his 50.7 percent first-year win in 2006.

He’s also a proven fundraiser. He earned nearly $14.5 million in the 2012 election year alone, for a lifetime total of $33,271,617 in the two Senate races, according to Ballotpedia.
