Little-known pol Barack Obama had his credit card declined at a rental car counter 16 years ago — an embarrassing moment that nearly led him out of politics, the outgoing president revealed.
Obama, then an Illinois state senator, was down in the dumps that year after he was trounced in his first shot at federal office, losing a congressional Democratic primary to incumbent Bobby Rush, 59 percent to 39 percent.
