Tech Publication Sues For FBI Files Relating To Roger Ailes

The tech publication Gizmodo filed a lawsuit Tuesday against the FBI in an attempt to obtain files relating to the late Roger Ailes, the founder and former chief of Fox News.

The outlet originally tried to acquire the records May 18 through the Freedom of Information Act, which grants any person or organization the right to request access to federal agency information. Gizmodo evidently felt compelled to embark on a litigative process after the FBI failed to supply it with the access to the records within the formal time period specified in the law.

The publication filed the legal complaint, which lists the FBI as a defendant, in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York.

“Needless to say, we’d really like to read them,” a writer for Gizmodo wrote on an article announcing the lawsuit.

There isn’t a lot of detail within the official lawsuit as to why Gizmodo wants the files. It lists his extensive influence, allegations of sexual harassment and the subsequent legal settlements that reportedly amounted to millions of dollars as its background of request.

Within the text of its announcement, it cites how former President Barack Obama once called him “the most powerful man in the world.” It also enumerates a number of accusations levied against Ailes, including sexual harassment, surveillance and blackmail.

“We can, perhaps, learn something we didn’t already know about the man who built a media empire before burning himself to the ground,” Gizmodo’s proclamation reads, “if only the FBI would kindly hand over those records.”

On the day Roger Ailes died, a subsidiary of the larger Gizmodo Media Group’s obituary for Roger Ailes was titled “I’m Sorry To Report Roger Ailes Ever Lived.”
