Democracy for America, a progressive political action committee, pulled its support from the Democratic candidate for governor of Virginia, Ralph Northam, citing his “anti-immigrant rhetoric on sanctuary cities.”
Northam said Wednesday that he would back a bill banning sanctuary cities, marking a change in his stance on an issue that his challenger, Republican Ed Gillespie, has repeatedly pressed during the campaign.
In a statement, Democracy for America Executive Director Charles Chamberlain explained the super PAC’s cessation of “direct aid” for Northam:
