A Russian web host says it removed the domain name of The Daily Stormer after the neo-Nazi website registered for a domain name in the country, according to a Radio Free Europe report published Thursday.
The neo-Nazi site has received a massive amount of backlash for publishing a story that mocked the death of Elizabeth Heyer — a woman killed Saturday by a white supremacist who drove a car into a crowd in Charlottesville, Va.
The country’s leading domain registrar company shut down the blog after Roskomnadzor, Russia’s media regulatory agency, launched an investigation into the site to see if it illegally included “extremist content.”
The publication “propagates neo-Nazi ideology and stirs up racial, national, and other forms of social discord,” said Aleksandr Zharov, the head of Roskomnadzor, reports Radio Free Europe. “Russian law has established a very strict regime for combatting any kind of extremism in the Internet.”
Russia’s purge of the anti-Semitic site is just one of many in a series of recent suspensions. GoDaddy, the popular domain registrar company, threatened to remove the hateful site late Sunday night if it did not find a new domain. Google also cleansed it from its platform, an action it took in less than 24 hours.
“We are cancelling Daily Stormer’s registration with Google Domains for violating our terms of service,” a representative for Google told The Daily Caller News Foundation.
Cloudflare — another company that manages domain names and offers hacking protection — has ended The Daily Stormer’s patronage, leaving it vulnerable to distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks.
Several social media companies, including YouTube, Twitter, and Facebook, also joined in by eliminating content sponsored by The Daily Stormer.
