Tom Carper (D-DE) admitted to smacking his wife in a recently unearthed interview from 1998, despite denying the allegations when he first ran for Congress in 1982.
Carper, who said the allegations published by the New York Post had no “basis in fact,” won the election by blaming his Republican opponent for trying to smear him and his wife, The Washington Free Beacon reported.
Sixteen years later Carper admitted to Delaware reporter Celia Cohen that the accusations that he hit his wife were true.
“Did I slap my wife 20 years ago? Yes,” Carper said. “Do I regret it? Yes. Would I do it again? No.”
