Metropolitan Police in London released Monday the identities of two of the three men involved in the London terror attack Saturday night.
Detectives from the Met’s Counter Terrorism Command believe the identities of two of the men are Kuhram Shazad Butt and Rachid Redouane from Barking, east London, the same location where police arrested 12 others suspected of having links to the attack on London Bridge and Borough Market.
According to the police, 27-year-old Butt was a British citizen originally born in Pakistan, while Redouane, 30, was both Moroccan and Libyan. Authorities are working to identify the third man involved in the attack.
Police killed three of the men within eight minutes of receiving the first call about the London Bridge attack, but the response time was not quick enough to save the lives of seven civilians killed by the terrorists, who hired a white Renault van and drove it off the road and onto the pavement of the London Bridge, in order to mow down pedestrians.
[give_form id=”79809″]The men then jumped out of the van and continued on to Borough Market, where they began stabbing people.
One eyewitness told BBC that the men shouted “this is for Allah” during the attack.
In total, 48 people were taken to the hospital, and 18 are still in critical condition, which means the number of fatalities could creep upward.
Police confirmed that Butt was known to police and MI5, but was not believed to have been planning an attack. Redouane was not known to authorities.
Assistant Commissioner Mark Rowley urged anyone with information on the men to come forward.
“The police and our partners are doing everything we can across the country to help prevent further attacks and protect the public from harm,” Rowley said.
Rowley said that security and intelligence services have foiled five terror plots since March after the attack on Westminster.
