Howard University Signs Comey As Convocation Speaker

Former FBI Director James Comey will give a lecture series at a historically black college and serve as the college’s keynote speaker at the beginning of the school year, the school announced Wednesday.

Comey is set to give the keynote address at Howard University’s Opening Convocation Sept. 23 to welcome freshman students for the new school year, the Washington D.C college said in a press release.

“I am pleased to welcome Mr. Comey to Howard,” Howard University President Wayne A.I. Frederick said. “His expertise and understanding of the challenges we continue to face today will go a long way in sparking rich discussion and advancing meaningful debates across campus.”

Howard University also made Comey the 2017-2018 Gwendolyn S. and Colbert I. King Endowed Chair in Public Policy, which means he will be giving the students a five part lecture series on topics yet to be announced. The King Chair was founded to give students the opportunity to meet and learn from public policy officials.

“Colby and I are delighted that a highly distinguished public official such as Jim Comey will become the holder of the Gwendolyn S. and Colbert I. King Endowed Chair in Public Policy for the coming academic year,” said Gwen King. ” Few in public life are better suited for this role than the experienced and esteemed Jim Comey.”

Comey is set to receive $100,000 for his commitment to the university, but plans to donate the entire fund to a Howard University scholarship that helps out students who grew up in foster homes.

“I am honored to hold the King Chair this school year. Howard has a longstanding history of being a vibrant academic community and the perfect place to have rich dialogue on many of the most pressing issues we face today,” Comey said. “I look forward to contributing to this remarkable institution and engaging students and faculty alike.”

Comey was fired by President Donald Trump in May, a few days after a recommendation from Department of Justice officials.
