On Tuesday, economist and former Harvard president Larry Summers predicted that 10,000 Americans would die every year due to proposed Republican tax reform. What would kill Americans about keeping their own money, pray tell? The repeal of the individual mandate. In other words, if you are not forced by the federal government to buy your own insurance and choose not to do so, you will have a higher chance of death.
Summers told MSNBC, “When people lose health insurance, they’re less likely to get preventive care, they’re more likely to defer health care they need, and ultimately they’re more likely to die.”
By this standard, the repeal of the 18th Amendment (prohibition) by the 21st Amendment caused thousands to die — according to the Centers for Disease Control, excessive alcohol use leads to 88,000 deaths per year from 2006-2010. At the very least, this means that millions have died thanks to government deregulation of alcohol.
