Fired diversity memo author James Damore: Google ‘almost like a cult’

Former Google Inc. software engineer James Damore penned another think piece about the company’s “echo chamber” Friday afternoon in which he claims he was fired due to public pressure and not fitting in at Google’s “cult.”

“For many, including myself, working at Google is a major part of their identity, almost like a cult with its own leaders and saints, all believed to righteously uphold the sacred motto of ‘Don’t be evil,’ ” Damore wrote in an op-ed in the Wall Street Journal titled “Why I was fired from Google.”

Google is a particularly intense echo chamber because it is in the middle of Silicon Valley and is so life-encompassing as a place to work,” he continued. “With free food, internal meme boards and weekly company-wide meetings, Google becomes a huge part of its employees’ lives. Some even live on campus.”
