Elon Musk: Robots Pose Greater Threat To Humanity Than North Korea

Tech billionaire Elon Musk says artificial intelligence poses as great a threat to the world as a nuclear-armed North Korea.

The increasing prevalence of AI poses “vastly more risk” to the world than does the nuclear intentions of North Korea, Musk told his Twitter followers in August. Musk has made similar comments in the past, but has never compared the fallout from so-called AI with that of a possible nuclear holocaust.

“If you’re not concerned about AI safety, you should be,” he tweeted, indicating it’s much more dangerous than North Korean dictator, Kim Jong-un. He included a picture in the tweet that reads: “In The End The Machines Will Win.”

His tweets could amount to a publicity stunt for his anti-AI non profit group, OpenAI, which recently developed a simulation showing how a robot can predict where human players deploy military forces and improvise on the spot. The game that OpenAI created shows how AI can be better and faster tactical thinkers than humans.

Musk ratcheted up his rhetoric on the issue in July during a National Governors Association (NGA) summer meeting in Rhode Island. He described so-called AI as the “biggest risk we face as a civilization.”

“Until people see robots going down the street killing people, they don’t know how to react because it seems so ethereal,” he said, according to a report published by a tech outlet that attended the speech.

Musk used his financial clout in 2015 to fund a new non-profit company called Open AI, which seeks to fund artificial intelligence that will avoid extinguishing all of humankind. “Our goal is to advance digital intelligence in the way that is most likely to benefit humanity as a whole, unconstrained by a need to generate financial return,” the company website states.
