Rafael Marquez Alvarez, defender and captain for the Mexico National Team, was among 22 people who were sanctioned for allegedly having ties to a drug trafficking organization, according to the United States Treasury Department.
The department said in a statement that they will sanction 21 Mexican nationals and 42 entities for providing support that involves trafficking narcotics. The entities include restaurants, bars, tourism, music production, the Grand Casino in Guadalajara, the Mexican Football club, and Club Deportivo Morumbi.
Raul Flores Hernandez was the operator of this drug organization for more than 20 years and was able to cover up his work by working with other drug cartels. Flores Hernandez has worked independently in Guadalajara while painting relationships Sinaloa and Jalisco New Generation cartels.
The U.S. Department of Treasury said, “This action marks the largest single Kingpin Act action against a Mexican drug cartel network that OFAC (Office of Foreign Assets Control) has designated.” The result of the sanction had frozen all assets of the individuals, entities have been frozen, and no U.S. persons may conduct business with them.
A famous Mexico singer known as Julion Alvarez was also sanctioned.
