What Is Dictionary.com Doing Weighing In On A Political Debate?

Dictionary.com waded into a political debate Wednesday, insisting that “affirmative action” did not mean “discrimination against white people.”

The online reference source made the statement in response to a pending investigation by President Donald Trump’s administration into affirmative action on college campuses.

“#AffirmativeAction = encouragement of representation of women & minorities,” tweeted Dictionary. “=/= discrimination against white people.”

Dictionary.com received criticism in 2014 for example sentences for the word “homeschool.”

“If you want to keep your kids from reality and turn them into mindless automaton copies of yourself, homeschool them, said one example. “If she can’t find anyone willing to validate her helicopter parenting, she’ll homeschool,” suggested another.

The Oxford English Dictionary made headlines in June when it announced it would add “woke” and “post-truth” to its lexicon.

The Daily Caller News Foundation reached out to Dictionary.com for comment, but received none in time for publication.
