A white man running for mayor in St. Petersburg, Fla. told black people to “go back to Africa” during a Tuesday forum.

Republican candidate Paul Congemi responded to fellow candidate Jesse Nevel’s proposal to create more recreational and community centers for the black community as a form of reparations by telling black people to go back to Africa, reports WTSP.

“Mr. Nevel, you and your people talk about reparations. The reparations that you talk about, Mr. Nevel, your people already got your reparations,” Congemi said. “Your reparations, your reparations came in the form of a man named Barack Obama. My advice to you, if you don’t like it here in America, planes leave every hour from Tampa airport. Go back to Africa. Go back to Africa. Go back!”

Congemi released a statement to the Tampa Bay Times, saying he was only referring to the black people that Nevel represents. Nevel’s campaign slogan is “Unity through Reparations.”

“I must comment on the remarks I said last night … Yes: I did tell those people to go back to Africa,” Congemi wrote. “My remark was meant for the group Mr. Nevel represents. Not all African Americans. Just those that Nevel represents.”
