Trump: North Korea Threat Will Be Great For Guam’s Tourism Industry

North Korea’s threat to launch nuclear missiles toward Guam will cause the U.S. territory’s tourism to “go up like tenfold,” President Donald Trump told Guam Gov. Eddie Calvo Friday evening.

“I think — tourism, I can say this, your tourism, you’re going to go up like tenfold with the expenditure of no money, so I congratulate you,” Trump said during a phone call released by Calvo on his Facebook page.

Trump complimented Calvo on the natural beauty of the Pacific island 3,950 miles west of Hawaii. “It just looks like a beautiful place,” Trump said.

USA Today reported that the threats from North Korean President Kim Jon-un to send missiles into the waters around Guam may affect the island’s tourism industry, which brings 1.3 million visitors a year. Many of those visitors come from Asia, and Guam hosted 61,000 tourists from South Korea, a nation used to living with threats from Kim, in July alone.

“I just wanted to pay my respects, and we are with you 1,000 percent. You are safe,” Trump told Calvo at the start of the three minute call.

Calvo was effusive in praising Trump for his strong stance against the North Korean threat. “Mr. President, I have never felt so safe as with you at the helm,” Calvo told Trump.

Trump reiterated his commitment to defending Guam, and all U.S territories, in the event that Kim Jong-un follows through on his threats.

“I wish there would be less partisanship up there,” Calvo said. “This is a time of threats to the US — it shouldn’t be Democrats and Republicans, it should be everybody uniting around our president.”

“Well, you’re right about that,” Trump replied. “But unfortunately we’re living a very obstructionist group. But maybe that will change.”

Trump also said “there’s no partisanship” in the military.
