Trump Admin Calls Out US Media for Being ‘Complicit’ in North Korea’s Propaganda Campaign

Trump administration officials have attacked the mainstream media’s “complicit” coverage of North Korea at the Winter Olympics, while emphasizing that the U.S. has no plans to ease up the pressure on the regime.

Multiple media outlets provided positive coverage of Kim Yo Jong’s presence at the games, which are being held in Pyeongchang, South Korea.

Kim Yo Jong is the sister of North Korean dictator Kim Jonh Un, as well as a high-ranking official in the country’s government.

The dictator’s sister was “stealing the show at the Winter Olympics,” CNN declared in a headline. The New York Times wrote that Kim had “turn(ed) on the charm,” while The Washington Post called her the “Ivanka Trump of North Korea.”

However, according to an unnamed senior Trump administration official, this “fawning coverage” has made these outlets “complicit” in North Korea’s propaganda campaign.

“With its fawning coverage of Kim Yo Jong and the Kim regime, much of the U.S. media has unintentionally become complicit in North Korea’s charm offensive,” the official told The Washington Free Beacon. – READ MORE

The media has given Kim Jong Un’s sister, Kim Yo Jong, plenty of press coverage at the Olympics, even comparing her to Ivanka Trump. Headlines have been written, saying, “Kim Jong Un’s sister is stealing the show at the Winter Olympics” and “North Korea heads for diplomacy gold medal at Olympics: analysts.”

However, they seem to be forgetting something: North Korea is a murderous regime that runs concentration camps.

The Daily Caller interviewed Ji Seong Ho, the defector who attended President Donald Trump’s State of the Union address, to hear his take on the media’s focus on Kim Yo Jong.

“Yo Jong’s grandfather, Kim Il Sung, is a war criminal, and her father, Kim Jong Il, killed three million people by starvation. Kim Jong Un is responsible for human rights violations and assassination of his own half-brother.

The Kim family is taking hostage of the North Korean people and threatening the world with its nuclear weapons. Therefore, South Korean people hate Kim Yo Jong and her visit.

I personally think she should be mindful of her place, stop looking down on other people arrogantly and feel guilty.” – READ MORE

While millions worldwide watch the best athletes compete for gold and glory in the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea, millions of Americans are also watching another drama unfold: the media’s apparent fascination with all things North Korean.

While a little bit of curiosity about the secretive regime is certainly understandable and maybe even warranted, the media response to what some are calling a “charm offensive” on the part of North Korea is a little baffling to many.

Kim Jong Un surprised the world — and no one more than his neighbors to the south — when he said that the North Korean regime intended to send a delegation to the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea.

The goal, ostensibly, was to present an image of a more unified Korean Peninsula — and many warned that a deeper objective might be politically motivated, suggesting that Kim intended to drive a wedge between South Korea and its close allies, Japan and the United States.

So far, led by Kim’s sister Kim Yo Jong, the North Korean delegation has certainly made an impression on a number of media outlets — but it was the joint Korean women’s hockey team that made an impression on four-time hockey world champion and Olympic gold medalist Angela Ruggiero, an American member of the International Olympic Committee.

Ruggiero told Reuters:

I would love the team to get the Nobel Peace Prize.

Seriously, the team. Something that is recognizing the sacrifice they made to adjusting their competitions.

On Saturday, CNN published an article with the headline “Kim Jong Un’s sister is stealing the show at the Winter Olympics” after she went viral on social media for her side-eye glances and Vice President Mike Pence when they were seated near each other.

The first line of the story reads, “If ‘diplomatic dance’ were an event at the Winter Olympics, Kim Jong Un’s younger sister would be favored to win gold.” The news outlet added: “With a smile, a handshake and a warm message in South Korea’s presidential guest book, Kim Yo Jong has struck a chord with the public just one day into the Pyeongchang Games.”

The article even has an entire section titled “North Korea’s Ivanka Trump” where it compares the two because “experts say her visit for the Winter Games is calculated to answer the expected presence of Ivanka Trump at the closing ceremonies.”
