Gregory, in addition to his comedic prowess, was an outspoken civil rights advocate. When Gregory dared criticize the FBI, according to FBI memos, there was talk of hiring a mob hit man to silence the African-American comedian.
Yes, this is a true story. J Edgar Hoover, then FBI director, ordered the FBI to “neutralize” Gregory.
