The New York Times released video footage Saturday that shows a man fire a single shot into the ground during white nationalist protest that turned violent in Charlottesville.

The video, captured by the American Civil Liberties Union of Virginia and made available exclusively by TheNYT on Aug. 26, shows a white nationalist dressed in body armor pointing and then firing a handgun in front of the crowd of counter-protesters. The video shows the man casually make his way from the scene, where he passes by a group of police officers.

The footage appears to show the police failing to react to the shooting. It is unclear if the officers were aware that someone had fired a gun.

Local and state police in Virginia have been criticized for what some characterized as inaction during the events of Aug. 12. A suspect in the shooting is in police custody, according to TheNYT. (An Exclusive Look At How Virginia Police Emptied Emancipation Park)

White supremacist and white nationalist groups converged on Emancipation Park, formerly Lee Park, for a planned “Unite the Right” rally Aug. 12. The group was met by Black Lives Matter, Antifa, and other leftist groups where confrontations turned violent. (Charlottesville: A Complete Timeline)

Multiple arrests were made and dozens of protesters were injured before police declared a state of emergency and cleared out the park. The violence turned lethal when James Alex Fields Jr. allegedly drove through a group of counter-protesters, killing 32-year-old Heather Heyer and injuring 19.
