Report: Mueller Subpoenas Paul Manafort’s Former Lawyer, Spokesman

Special Counsel Robert Mueller has issued subpoenas for a former lawyer for former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort and his current spokesman, CNN is reporting.

The subpoenas seek documents and testimony from Melissa Laurenza, a former Manafort lawyer with the firm Akin Gump and Jason Maloni, his current spokesman.

As CNN notes, the subpoena for Laurenza is unusual given that Manafort’s interactions with his attorney would be protected by attorney-client privilege.

The issuance of the new subpoenas suggests that Mueller is ramping up his investigation of Manafort, a longtime Republican operative who served on the Trump campaign for several months until last August.

Manafort was essentially fired from the campaign after news reports were published about his lobbying work for a Ukrainian political party that worked on behalf of former Ukrainian president Viktor Yanukovych, an ally of Russian president Vladimir Putin.

Mueller, a former FBI director, appears to be investigating possible financial crimes involving Manafort’s overseas business activities.

Last month, Mueller obtained a search warrant to conduct a raid on Manafort’s home in Virginia.

Maloni, Manafort’s spokesman, did not respond to a request for comment about the subpoena or whether he will continue working for Manafort.
