One Dead, Several Injured In Suspected Terror Attack In Germany
One person was killed and several were injured Friday after a man entered a supermarket in Hamburg and started stabbing people at random, German police report.
The suspect was covered in blood when police arrested him shortly after the attack as he tried to flee the scene.
“After the attack he fled from the shop. Eye witnesses followed him out and were able to inform the police,” a police spokesman told Die Welt. “Shortly afterwards officers arrested the suspect on the street in the vicinity of the shop.”
Tabloid Bild reports that the man shouted “Allahu akbar” (God is great) prior to the stabbing rampage. Bild further claims that a terror alert has been issued, but police have not yet confirmed the information.
“There is no valid information yet on the motive or the number of people injured,” the spokesman told Welt.

Germany suffered a number of terror incidents in 2016, most notably the attack on a Berlin Christmas market Dec. 19. Germany’s domestic intelligence agency (BfV) recently warned that the growing number of Islamist militants in the country makes further terror attacks highly likely.
“We have to assume that we can expect further attacks by individuals or terror commandos in Germany too,” BfV chief Hans-Georg Maassen said at a press conference July 5. “Islamist terrorism is the biggest challenge facing the BfV and we see it as one of the biggest threats facing the internal security of Germany.”
