NYC Investigates Allegations Of Swastika Display In Queens Apartment Building Lobby

NEW YORK—The City of New York announced Tuesday an investigation into allegations that displays of “Nazi and Confederate imagery, swastikas and other hate symbols” appeared in a Queens, New York apartment building lobby.

The NYC Commission on Human Rights launched a probe into the property manager or managers at the behest of City Council Majority Leader Jimmy Van Bramer as well as tenants and condo owners as a result of public reports from tenants about management tied to the offensive displays in the common area.

“It is now more important than ever for New Yorkers to stand united as one city and reject discrimination and intolerance,” said Mayor Bill de Blasio. “We will not let tenants in Sunnyside or across the five boroughs be intimidated or threatened for speaking out against hatred.”

The investigation comes in the wake of the violence that erupted in Charlottesville, Va., where Neo Nazis and white supremacists clashed with anti-fascist demonstrators. The incident left three dead including one woman, Heather Heyer, and two Virginia State troopers.

“Amid hostile national rhetoric, hate speech and violence over the last year, the Commission has increased outreach and enforcement efforts across the City so people understand their rights,” de Blasio’s office said noting that reports of discriminatory harassment in the city skyrocketed by 480 percent  in 2016 with  203 reports of discriminatory harassment made in 2016 compared to 35 in 2015.
