Marshawn Lynch Dodges Questions About Sitting For The National Anthem

Marshawn Lynch has returned to the football field after just a one-year retirement and he’s already up to his old tricks with media.

It remains unclear whether or not Lynch meant to make a statement by sitting during the national anthem before the Oakland Raiders game against the Arizona Cardinals on Saturday. The Raiders running back met with the media on Thursday where reporters repeatedly asked him about sitting, but Lynch dodged their questions like he would a tackle on the field.

The first reporter to address the “elephant in the room” informed Lynch of the media attention that has come over him not standing for the national anthem.

“I think that elephant just left the room cause a little mouse ran in here,” Lynch responded. “Didn’t they say elephants are scared of mouses or something? That mother f**ker left, cousin.”

Another reporter took a crack at getting an answer out of Lynch from a different angle, asking how he would feel about Raiders fans wearing his jersey sitting or standing for the anthem.

“So when we run ’74’ or something like that where I’ve got to scan and read both sides, that’d be pretty difficult,” the running back responded. “But for the most part, I’m a veteran so I can make it work.”

The former Seattle Seahawk retired at the end of the of the 2015-16 season and was absent from the NFL when Colin Kaepernick decided to use the national anthem as his platform to protest racial injustice. So, of course, when Lynch sat for the anthem, everyone figured he was protesting too.

However, the NFL Network’s Michael Robinson, who played with Lynch on the Seahawks, said that the reserved running back often sat for the anthem, but nobody noticed back then. It’s funny how much difference a year makes.
