Labour Party Looks To Oust Theresa May And Form Gov’t After Shock Election

The Labour Party will look to oust Theresa May and the Conservatives and form a minority government despite finishing second in Thursday’s election, party officials said Friday.

The Labour Party is considered the big winners in the election after gaining 31 seats. Theresa May — who called the snap election to strengthen her government ahead of Brexit — lost her absolute majority after dropping 12 seats.

Both parties expressed interest in forming the next government. The Labour Party is looking to the smaller parties for support if May fails to reach a majority.

“We’re ready to form a government … we are willing to serve the country,” Labour Shadow Chancellor John McDonnell said, according to The Independent. “I don’t think the Conservative Government is stable, I don’t think the prime minister is stable. I don’t want to be derogatory, but I think she is a lame duck no.”

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn did not directly say he will pursue becoming the next prime minister, but said the party is ready “to serve the people.”

“We’re ready to serve the people who have given their trust to us,” Corbyn said of the results, according to The Guardian. “My party has had a huge increase in its vote, gained seats all over the country, in every region of this country and in Scotland and Wales.”

As the incumbent government, the Conservatives will have the first opportunity to win the confidence of the House of Commons. If the party fails to win over at least 10 members of parliament, Corbyn and the Labour Party will get a chance to form a government.
