Amid controversy over whether Christian bakers have the right to refuse to bake cakes for same-sex weddings, Supreme Court Justice Neil Gorsuch has revealed the truth about wedding cakes themselves.
“In fact, I have yet to have a wedding cake that I would say tastes great,” he said while listening to arguments for Masterpiece Cakeshop v. Colorado Civil Rights Commission. The courtroom reportedly erupted into laughter.
The case itself involves a Christian baker, Jack Phillips, who refused to make a custom cake for a gay couple’s wedding reception.
A main topic of discussion for the case is whether or not the cake serves as creative expression, and is thus entitled to receive protection under the First Amendment.
Gorsuch’s retort pointed out that “some creation serves both utilitarian and speech interests,” according to The Daily Caller.
