Journal Editor Apologizes For Not Having Black Writers Contribute To BLM Issue
An international journal was forced to apologize Thursday after it featured no black writers in its volume on the Black Lives Matter movement.
The Journal of Political Philosophy’s editor, Robert Goodin, wrote an open letter after a black Yale professor noticed the lack of black writers in the Black Lives Matter issue, reports the New York Post.
“We, the Editors, sincerely apologize for the oversight in not including a Black author in a Symposium explicitly entitled ‘Black Lives Matter,’” Goodin and two other colleagues wrote. “We accept the point eloquently and forcefully made by our colleagues that this is an especially grave oversight in light of the specific focus of Black Lives Matter on the extent to which African-Americans have been erased and marginalized from public life.”
Goodin added that the journal would take extra steps to avoid a mistake like this in the future. The journals will try to add two black editors to the editorial board, because the journal doesn’t have any.
“We have learnt important lessons here and will do our utmost to avoid such oversights and errors in the future and to be more sensitive in the manner we encourage, curate, frame and present work that engages with issues of grievous and persistent injustice,” Goodin explained.
Chris Lebron, a Yale associate professor of African-American studies, discussed his “distaste” for the exclusion of black writers.
“What is so deflating about the journal’s misstep here is that this contribution to the historical record is in fact a kind of replaying of history that the movement for black lives has dedicated itself to eliminating from a society struggling to be decent – the erasure of black presence when and where it counts and is needed,” Lebron wrote Wednesday.
