ISIS Claims Responsibility For Deadly Suicide Bombing In Indonesia

Share:

The Islamic State has claimed responsibility for a suicide bombing at a bus terminal in the Indonesian capital.

Back-to-back explosions killed three Indonesian police officers Wednesday in Jakarta and wounded twelve other people nearby.

“The executor of the attack on the Indonesian police gathering in Jakarta was an Islamic State fighter,” ISIS’s Amaq news agency said, according to reports from Reuters.

The attack is the deadliest since ISIS gunmen attacked a commercial center in Jakarta in January of last year. Indonesia has also experienced low-level attacks by ISIS sympathizers.

There has been a marked rise in ISIS-linked terrorist activity this past week. The suicide bombing in Indonesia followed the attack in Manchester that killed over 20 people and intense fighting in Marawi in the southern Philippines, where a police officer was beheaded and innocent civilians were slaughtered by militants that fly the black ISIS flag.

Indonesian police have arrested three people in connection with Wednesday’s bombing. Authorities have determined that the terrorists who carried out the attack used pressure cookers packed with explosives. The weapons were described as “crude but developing.” The two bombers were identified as 30-year-old men from the West Java city of Bandung.

Indonesian officials, including the president, are considering accelerating the approval and implementation of new counterterrorism legislation. There has been a growing concern about radicalization and the rise of extremism in Indonesia, a Muslim majority country where the hardliners are gaining momentum.
