Hawaii Gov. David Ige signed legislation that supports the Paris Accord this week, making it the first state to implement aspects of the international agreement to fight climate change, reports NBC News.
One of the laws expanded existing strategies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions across the state in accordance to the goals outlined in the Paris Accord. The other creates a task force charged with cutting carbon emissions in the agricultural sector.
“Hawaii is committed to environmental stewardship,” Ige said in a statement. “Together, we can directly contribute to the global agenda of achieving a more resilient and sustainable island.”
More than 10 other states have signed similar pledges to reduce fossil-fuel emissions despite President Trump’s decision for the United States to pull out of the international agreement 195 other countries have signed to combat climate change.
Other members include New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Delaware, Vermont, Virginia, Rhode Island, Minnesota, California, Oregon, and Washington state.
