German authorities successfully defused a powerful World War II-era bomb Sunday in Frankfurt, according to Reuters.

The 60,000 people who were compelled to evacuate the city will soon be allowed to reenter and resume normal activity. It was the largest forced departure in Germany since the war, reports Reuters, after officials in Hannover evacuated roughly 50,000 people from their residences in May and 54,000 civilians from Augsburg in December. Emergency workers cleared Frankfurt so explosive experts could deactivate the massive incendiary device, which was discovered last week on a building site.

The exposure of WWII bombs is not extraordinary as there have been at least five such incidences in the past eight years. Many of the explosives are unearthed during commercial excavations. Allied warplanes bombarded Germany with more than 1.7 million tons of of bombs throughout the war, according to Reuters. The bombing campaigns killed hundreds of thousands of people, but also left a number of functioning explosives that have laid untouched for years.
