A Border Patrol agent who was stabbed in the eye during a fight in a bar parking lot has died, according to El Paso police.

Isaac Morales, 30, succumbed Thursday to wounds he suffered in an altercation in the parking lot of The Union Draft House early Saturday morning, police said.

The alleged assailant, Hisaias Justo Lopez, 39, who was initially arrested on a charge of attempted murder, is now facing murder charges. He is currently being held at the El Paso County Jail on a $500,000 bond, the El Paso Times reported.

Morales, who was off duty at the time of the attack, was walking with his wife to their vehicle when Lopez approached the couple and brandished a knife, according to a police affidavit.

Morales initially ignored the confrontation until Lopez allegedly struck his wife. When Morales identified himself as law enforcement, Lopez fled the scene.

As Morales, a friend and other witnesses chased Lopez through the parking lot, the assailant suddenly turned and stabbed the Border Patrol agent in the face and eye, the affidavit said.

Witnesses caught up with Lopez about a block from the scene of the stabbing and held him until police arrived. Law enforcement officials have not publicly released the suspect’s mug shot.

A GoFundMe account was established for Morales on Monday when he was lying in critical condition. The account has raised more than $13,000 for hospital and funeral expenses as of Thursday afternoon.
