Six French soldiers were injured, two of them seriously, in a hit and run Wednesday in the Paris suburb of Levallois-Perret.

The incident took place around 8 a.m. local time outside military barracks in the northwest of the city. The driver managed to flee the scene after the attack, and an anti-terror unit is leading the investigation. The suspect was later shot and arrested as he was heading for the port of Calais. Police identified him as a man born in 1980.

“When I saw the soldiers on alert I realized something serious was happening,” local resident Tess Despres Pereira told FRANCE 24. “Some tended to the injured while others sought to secure the neighborhood. It’s a very disturbing thing to see. You don’t imagine this can happen in front of your home.

Levallois-Perret Mayor Patrick Balkany said there is “no doubt” that the incident was deliberate as the car “accelerated very quickly” when the soldiers left the barracks.

“A BMW pre-positioned itself in the alley and barreled into them,” Balkany toldBFM TV.

More than 230 people have been killed in terror attacks in France since the start of 2015. The country has been in a state of emergency for almost two years.
