Baltimore Police Stand By Officers In Third ‘Questionable’ Body Cam Video

Baltimore Police Commissioner Kevin Davis defended his officers Thursday in the face of a third body cam video showing police engaged in behavior that Baltimore Attorney Marilyn Mosby called “questionable.”

The video came to light in early August after it was “self-reported” during a seizure of evidence re-enactment, marking the third time in the past month that the department has come under fire for questionable handling of evidence. Mosby is moving to dismiss 43 cases in connection with the three officers in the video video. Davis, however, argues there’s nothing questionable about the video because the police officers involved brought it forward themselves, The Baltimore Sun reported.

“Just like any relationship there will be bumps in the road,” Davis said. “This is a bump in the road that affects my police officers that I know were acting with good intentions.”

The case relates to 22-year-old Tyqwon Jones, who police arrested on drug charges June 14. In jail, Jones called a friend and described the location of drugs inside a cigar case near the location of the arrest. Police, who were listening to the call, then went to the described location to retrieve the drugs.

The “questionable” video, dated June 17, shows an officer finding the drugs inside the cigar case and placing it back on the ground. He then turns on his body camera and picks up the cigar case again. Body cameras automatically record the 30 seconds prior to activation. The police officers involved notified the department that the video was a re-enactment and never tried to say otherwise, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.

“There is nothing questionable about this. The officers did exactly what I, and the community expects of them: to go out, make legal arrests based on sound probable cause,” Davis said. “A decision to drop all cases and pending cases involving these three police officers simply does not help the crime fight.”
