A Large Caliber Bullet Couldn’t Stop Scalise, He Is Walking Again

House Majority Whip Steve Scalise is on the mend and learning to walk again after he was shot at a congressional baseball practice in Virginia in June, Speaker of the House Paul Ryan said Monday.

Ryan said Monday evening that Scalise hopped on a call with House Republicans to discuss the agenda for when members return to Washington in September. The call was reportedly the first time Scalise’s colleagues had heard his voice since he was shot.

“It was very emotional for us,” Ryan said Monday. “He has a long road ahead of him, he’s going to be ok. His body’s healing.”

“Enjoyed talking to my  colleagues on the phone today & look forward to seeing them all once I’m able,” Scalise posted on Twitter Monday.

Scalise will undoubtedly be important to Republicans who are ardently trying to score their first legislative win of President Donald Trump’s presidency. He will be responsible for whipping House GOP members behind the party’s legislative agenda.

The House majority whip has had multiple surgeries since the shooting, and has been in and out of the intensive care unit. Despite a few setbacks, Scalise appears to be making a steady recovery.

Scalise’s office has yet to announce when he will return to Washington, but his presence on Monday’s phone call shows he is still very much involved in the agenda setting on Capitol Hill.
