Why Is It Wrong To Condemn Both Fascists And Communists?

Share:

As we’ve all heard, on August 13th a bunch of Alt Right fascists had a rally in Charlottesville. The police shut the event down, then Antifa attacked, the Alt Right fought back, or sometimes vice versa, and then one on the fascist side drove his car into the crowd, murdering one woman and injuring several others.

In the midst of this chaos, Donald Trump called for the country to “come together as one” and, very controversially, decried “hate on both sides.”

The Left went into a furor. Keith Olbermann called Trump a Nazi (again). Mark Moulistas, the founder of The Daily Kos, called all conservatives Nazi’s. Facebook and Twitter erupted with all sorts of hysterical remarks. For example, a friend of mine said bluntly “Donald Trump is a terrorist!” One would think that after the Steve Scalise shooting, and the execution of a Republican committeeman in Pennsylvania by a leftwing fanatic, this kind of rhetoric would have abated. One would be wrong.

Republican John Kasich, for his part, said he may have to challenge Trump in 2020 because:

There is no moral equivalency to Nazi sympathizers. There can be no room in America – or the Republican Party – for racism, anti-Semitism, hate or white nationalism. Period.

I would certainly agree with Kasich that Nazi sympathizers are despicable. But I can easily think of one moral equivalent to fascism. And that would be communism.

Lest we forget the famous figure of 100,000,000,000 people that The Black Book of Communism concluded communist governments had killed between 1917 and 1991. Some believe that figure is too high, but even the most conservative figures come to around 65 million.

As far as moral equivalence goes, I think the likes of Adolf Hitler, Benito Mussolini and Francisco Franco are put to test by the likes of Joseph Stalin, Kim Jung-Il, Kim Il-Sung, Mao Zedong, Pol Pot, Fidel Castro and Vladimir Lenin.

And speaking of Vladimir Lenin, apparently Seattle has a statue of the communist terrorist for some reason. Perhaps it’s time to tear that down.

Of course the Nazi’s were guilty of the Holocaust– possibly the worst genocide in human history–and many other unspeakable crimes. But the communists have their own blood-soaked history with the Holodomorthe Killing Fieldsthe Great Purgethe Great Leap Forward and the Cultural Revolution.

If you think communism “wasn’t as bad,” perhaps you should read how Chinese historian Frank Dikötter describes The Great Leap Forward, if you have the stomach for it that is:

State retribution for tiny thefts, such as stealing a potato, even by a child, would include being tied up and thrown into a pond; parents were forced to bury their children alive or were doused in excrement and urine, others were set alight, or had a nose or ear cut off. One record shows how a man was branded with hot metal. People were forced to work naked in the middle of winter; 80 per cent of all the villagers in one region of a quarter of a million Chinese were banned from the official canteen because they were too old or ill to be effective workers, so were deliberately starved to death.

And for those who want to say that “real communism has never been tried,” spare me. As Frank Fleming put it, the “Difference between Nazi and Communist is when you say how horrible Nazis have been, they don’t say, ‘Well, real Nazism has never been tried’” Regardless, “real communism” is a utopian pipe dream and can’t possibly work in the real world.

So we come to Antifa, which is quite arguably a domestic terrorist organization as they defend the use of political violence and engage in it quite often. Indeed, this is not a new phenomenon on the Left. For example, The Weather Underground and the Symbionese Liberation Army were both leftwing terrorist groups in the United States. Retired FBI agent Mark Noel remarked that “People have completely forgotten that in 1972 we had over nineteen hundred domestic bombings in the United States.” Indeed, a 2001 Department of Energy study found that:

From an international perspective, of the 13,858 people who died between 1988 and 1998 in attacks committed by the 10 most active terrorist groups in the world, 74 percent were killed by leftist organizations.

Antifa, for its part, has not just attacked Alt Right events, but they’ve attacked events held by regular Trump supporters or even “Never Trumpers” such as Charles Murray. At a speech by Milo Yiannopoulous (who briefly flirted with, but has later disavowed and been disavowed by the Alt Right), Antifa maced a woman and knocked a man unconscious before continuing to beat him. At a Free Speech rally in Berkeley, a random Trump supporter was hit in the head with a bike lock in an attack that easily could have killed him. And that’s just a small sampling of the attacks, riots and the like Antifa has committed.

Yes, by far the worst act of violence in Charlottesville was committed by someone on the Alt Right when he drove into the crowd and murdered a young woman. And the reaction from the notorious Daily Stormer website was unconscionable. But it must be stated that it appears Antifa started most of the fighting. After all, the Alt Right was just there to have their stupid, hateful rally and leave. Antifa certainly injured a lot of Alt Right attendees, such as this man. And when Baked Alaska said he might have permanent eye damage from being maced, some on the Left celebrated.

I ask you, if “it’s OK to attack Nazi’s,” why “isn’t it OK to attack communists?”

And make no mistake about it, Antifa is a communist organization. Even the Washington Post acknowledges “Its adherents are predominantly communists, socialists and anarchists who reject turning to the police or the state to halt the advance of white supremacy.” Remember, most in the Alt Right don’t actually call themselves “fascists.”

It should, of course, be noted that not all of the protesters in Charlottesville were Antifa by any means. Black Lives Matter and other groups were there too. Those other groups weren’t the one’s fighting though.

Antifa makes no bones about it, they are communists. They really don’t even hide it as they don’t try to hide their willingness to use violence. The Left should also take note, as they have so helpfully told us, “liberals get the bullet too.”Those words were spray painted on a wall during an Antifa riot and was followed by a drawing of the hammer and sickle. Yeah, they’re communists.

Returning to Trump, in a press conference several days later, Trump stated that it was “a horrific attack” and “we condemn in the strongest possible terms this egregious display of hatred, bigotry and violence. It has no place in America.” But Trump also condemned the so-called “Alt Left” (or Antifa) and noted that “You had a group – you had a group on the other side that came charging in without a permit, and they were very, very violent.”

How did the Left react? Well, The Washington Post says Trump “sides with the alt-right” and US Today discusses “Trump’s defense of alt-right.” Sigh.

I have plenty of problems with Trump and his awkward attempt to not label everyone who showed up as a white supremacist was bad judgement. But the Left’s characterization of his argument is utterly ridiculous.

What this boils down to is that the Left wants to conflate the Right’s radicals with everyone on the Right and make conservatives and libertarians apologize for their radicals. At the same time, the Left will minimize, apologize for and brush aside its own. It’s the height of hypocrisy and it needs to be called out for what it is.

It’s about time the Left got a taste of its own medicine. The Right’s response–be they pro-Trump or anti-Trump–should simply be “Disavow Antifa, or you are a communist sympathizer.”
