While Congress Stalls Border Wall, Mexico Just Had Its Deadliest Month In 20 Years

Government data from Mexico indicates that June may have been Mexico’s deadliest month in at least 20 years.

“For the first six months of 2017, authorities nationwide recorded 12,155 homicide investigations, or 31 percent more than the 9,300 during the same period last year,” AP reports.

These aren’t the only alarming statistics coming from America’s southern neighbor. A recent report from Reuters on Mexico City indicates that violent crime has spiked in the area, and one police officer reportedly said that Mexico City’s law enforcement has “lost control of the situation.”

This is alarming, as the brutal violence often associated with the cartels was previously limited to more rural area’s in Mexico.

The arrival of such violence in metropolitan Mexico City signals a change in cartels’ violent strategies.

Such news comes as $1.6 billion has been set aside for President Donald Trump’s border wall in the most recent House budget. This will fund a small portion of border security, but will not be anywhere near close enough to fund the entire wall.
