On Friday, as West Point Cadets attended a pep rally at the Pentagon for the Army versus Navy game Saturday, they received a surprise visit from Defense Secretary Gen. James Mattis.

He was welcomed with cheers, and after shaking a few hands, he reminded everyone to have a “heck of a good time” at the game. While football is about fun, Mattis made a serious request of the cadets.

“We need every one of you,” he explained. “So, keep each other in the program, OK.”

Then, the defense secretary delivered an ominous message, followed by an explanation of the powerful statement one football game can make.
