President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu delivered remarks Monday from the head of state’s residence in Jerusalem.
The tone of the presser was optimistic, as Netanyahu stated, “it won’t be simple, but for the first time in many years and, Mr. President, for the first time in my lifetime, I see a real hope for change.”
But behind such optimistic statements were also signs of obstacles in the path for peace between Israel and Palestine, with Netanyahu stating at the start of the speech, “[welcome to] Jerusalem, the eternal capital of the Jewish people and the united capital of the Jewish state.”
This is a major stumbling block in the path for peace because the Palestinian Authority views Israel’s continued occupation of Jerusalem to be a direct affront to the Palestinian state.
Even Trump showed some restraint when discussing the potential for peace, “I’ve heard it’s one of the toughest deals of all. But I have a feeling that we are going to get there… eventually.”
