Trump Still Hasn’t Followed Through On Veteran Hotline Promise by Jonah Bennett.

Despite promises, the White House has still not established a hotline for veterans to report complaints of wrongdoing at the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).

Almost four months into the Trump administration, the promised hotline that was a part of President Donald Trump’s plan to shake things up at the VA has not come to fruition, Military Times reports.

“Mr. Trump will create a private White House hotline, which will be active 24 hours a day answered by a real person,” the sixth point of Trump’s VA reform plan states. “It will be devoted to answering veteran’s complaints of wrongdoing at the VA and ensure no complaints fall through the cracks.”

The promise of a hotline, along with other VA reforms, formed a large part of his election campaign in 2016, and while on the campaign trial, Trump stated that the he may even answer the hotline himself.

“I will create a private White House hotline. This could keep me very busy at night, folks. This will take the place of Twitter,” he said in July 2016.

“We’re going to take care of our veterans like they’ve never been taken care of before,” he added.

However, that hotline still does not exist, and the 10-point VA reform has been taken off of Trump’s campaign site.

Trump has managed to make some progress on other points listed in his reform plan. Late last month, the president signed an executive order creating the Office of Accountability and Whistleblower Protection. The new office will identify barriers that prevent the VA from removing bad senior officials and employees alike. The office is also designed to protect whistleblowers, though some whistleblowers are afraid that management may use the new emphasis on removing bad employees to drive out those who bring wrongdoing to light.
