Trump May Trigger Countdown To NAFTA Renegotiation Next Week by Thomas Phippen.

A Mexican official expects President Donald Trump’s administration to start the process for renegotiating the North American Free Trade Agreement next week, Reuters reports.

Mexico’s Economy Minister Ildefonso Guajardo said he expects Trump to notify Congress of a 90-day countdown to NAFTA renegotiation talks next week, but U.S. officials have not officially released a timeline.

“A timeline has not been determined” for the renegotiation, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Trade Representative, Emily Davis, told The Daily Caller News Foundation.

Officials would not be able to begin talks on NAFTA with Mexico and Canada until after the mandatory 90-day period of consultation with Congress.

“We’re moving forward to complete initial consultations with Congress as soon as possible to start the clock for negotiating a fair trade deal for American workers,” Davis said.

Guajardo met with U.S. Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross in Washington earlier this week.

Trump announced that he would renegotiate NAFTA rather than withdraw from the international trade agreement April 26, following calls with Mexican President Peña Nieto and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
