The Trump administration is expected to certify Iranian compliance with the nuclear agreement for the second time, a senior U.S. official told Reuters Thursday.
U.S. law states the administration must notify Congress of Iran’s compliance to the 2015 agreement, also known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, every 90 days. Trump has until Monday to make his final decision.
Trump promised to “tear up” the agreement while campaigning for the presidency in 2016. The deal was extremely controversial within Congress and some Middle Eastern U.S. allies, including Israel and Saudi Arabia, at the time of its signing.
The administration has eased its position on the agreement since entering office in January. It first signed off on Iranian compliance in May, but also added new sanctions on Iran’s ballistic missile program.
Iran has continued to be a problem for the U.S. in the Middle East despite the agreement. Iranian naval vessels have harassed American naval assets in the Persian Gulf several times since the accord. It is actively involved in supporting President Bashar al-Assad’s regime in Syria and acts as a major backer of the Houthis in Yemen who are currently fighting a Saudi Arabia-led coalition. Iranian leaders also continue to spew aggressive rhetoric against the U.S.
