Theresa May Says She Won’t Resign, Seeks Minority Gov’t

The Conservative Party will seek to form a minority government with the backing of the Democratic Unionist Party, British Prime Minister Theresa May said Friday.

May suffered a big blow in Thursday’s election, losing the party’s absolute majority. Despite calls for her resignation, May vows to stay on as prime minister.

“Over the next five years, build a country in which no one and no community is left behind,” May said in a short address Friday following her meeting with Queen Elizabeth II. “A country in which prosperity and opportunity are shared right across this U.K.”

May has reached out to DUP to get the 10 seats necessary to reach a majority.

“This will allow us to come together as a country and channel our energies towards a successful Brexit deal that works for everyone in this country, securing a new partnership with the EU which guarantees our long-term prosperity,” May said.

DUP has firmly rejected May’s “hard Brexit” approach in the past. Many have warned that the election results put Brexit in jeopardy, but May promised to deliver a good deal for the country.

“That’s what people voted for last June, that’s what we will deliver,” May said. “Now let’s get to work.”
