The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) claims it has received “confirmed information” from Islamic State leadership that ISIS founder Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi has been killed.

The report is the latest in a series of recent claims regarding al-Baghdadi’s status. A Pentagon spokesman told Reuters that the U.S. has received no information that confirms the report.

“[We have] confirmed information from leaders, including one of the first rank, in the Islamic State in the eastern countryside of Deir al-Zor,” SOHR director Rami Abdulrahman told Reuters, adding that the sources “did not specify when” the death took place.

The Russian defense ministry released a statement June 16 claiming al-Baghdadi died in a May 28 airstrike in Raqqa, Syria.

“According to the information that is being verified through various channels, IS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi also attended the meeting and was killed in the airstrike,” the ministry said in a statement, according to the Associated Press.
