Report: Massive Cuts To Public Education In Favor Of School Choice by Rob Shimshock.

President Donald Trump’s education plan would reduce the federal education budget by $10.6 billion, according to information published by The Washington Post Wednesday.

Public school funding that could go towards advanced education and mental health would be cut by hundreds of millions of dollars and funding allocated for work-study university initiatives would decrease by half, reported WaPo.

After-school programs servicing 1.6 million students and class-size reduction/teacher training would be reduced by $1.2 billion and $2.1 billion, respectively.

The Department of Education will allegedly dedicate $1 billion of the $10.6 billion cut to encouraging public schools to establish policies enabling school choice. Another $400 million will purportedly benefit charter schools and private/religious school vouchers.

The education budget is expected to be published on Tuesday, May 23, according to the Post.

“It’s time for us to break out of the confines of the federal government’s arcane approach to education,” Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos said in a May speech in Salt Lake City. “Washington has been in the driver’s seat for over 50 years with very little to show for its efforts.”

“The president and his Cabinet are working collaboratively to create a leaner, more efficient government that does more with less of taxpayers’ hard-earned dollars,” a White House official told the Post. Education Department spokeswoman Liz Hill also told the outlet that figures are preliminary until next week but that the proposal guards funding for special education, manages taxpayer dollars sensibly, and showcases the department’s commitment to school choice for poorer students.

The Daily Caller News Foundation reached out to the Department of Education for comment but received none in time for publication.
