Poll Suggests Theresa May Will Lose Her Majority

British Prime Minister Theresa May and her conservatives could lose their majority in parliament, according to a YouGov prediction one week before the general election.

The constituency-by-constituency estimate suggests the Conservative Party would win 310 seats, down 20 from its current 330. The Labour Party would gain 28 seats to reach 257. A majority requires at least 326 seats. Most polling institutes still predict May will hold onto a majority, but the party has taken a hit since announcing cuts for senior citizens May 18 in its election manifesto.

The pound sterling fell against other major currencies Tuesday night in response to the shock estimate.

YouGov acknowledged that the model allows for a wide margin of error. The best case scenario for the Conservatives would give the party as many as 345 seats, 15 more than it currently holds, while a bad election night could result in just 274 seats for May.

May called the snap election when polls pointed toward a 23-point landslide victory.

The manifesto would restrict the currently universal winter fuel payment for older people and rearrange the costs of caring for them.

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn said the manifesto would create a “war between generations” if implemented.

The general election will take place June 8.
