Oh Chong Song, a 25-year-old North Korean soldier, defected in the Joint Security Area at the Demilitarized Zone in November, first in a jeep and then on foot, his comrades hot on his heels. He was shot five times, but he miraculously survived his daring escape.

“I would like to eat Choco Pies,” he told South Korean medical personnel once he had recovered enough to consume some solid food.

Choco Pies are South Korean-made chocolate-covered, marshmallow-filled snacks that became popular in North Korea when they were distributed to North Korean workers in Kaesong, an industrial park jointly run by North and South Korea until it was closed last year in response to North Korea’s provocative test of a nuclear bomb.
