A majority of Republican voters believe Donald Trump Jr.’s meeting with the Russian lawyer during the 2016 presidential campaign was “appropriate,” according to a poll released Wednesday.

The Morning Consult/Politico survey showed 52 percent of conservatives believe the June 2016 meeting between Trump Jr. and Russian lawyer, Natalia Veselnitskaya, was “appropriate.”

Only 28 percent of Republicans believed the meeting was “inappropriate” and 20 percent said they weren’t sure. The Democrats had a much different view on the meeting according to the survey, with 81 percent saying Trump Jr.’s meeting was inappropriate.

The survey also asked participants about impeaching President Donald Trump. Forty-six percent of registered voters believe Congress should not impeach Trump, and 40 percent believe he should be impeached.

Democratic strategist Josh Nanberg said the survey’s numbers were an indication “that the president’s ‘nothing to see here’ messaging is taking hold,” Morning Consult reported.

Voters did not think that collusion is an impeachable offense, according to the survey. Only 12 percent of the participants said Trump should be impeached even if Robert Mueller is appointed as special counsel and reaches a conclusion that Trump did coordinate with Russia.

The poll was conducted online with 1,994 registered voters throughout the country and had a 2 percentage point margin of error.
