Apple CEO Tim Cook sent a mournful email to staff Thursday expressing his deep displeasure in President Donald Trump’s decision to pull out of the Paris climate deal.
The tech leader said he did all he could to try to stop Trump from making the move.
“I know many of you share my disappointment with the White House’s decision to withdraw the United States from the Paris climate agreement,” Cook wrote, according to Axios. “I spoke with President Trump on Tuesday and tried to persuade him to keep the U.S. in the agreement. But it wasn’t enough.”
The White House said that the Paris Agreement was poorly negotiated by the previous administration and that it will cost American jobs at the expense of negligible, if any, ecological benefit. Other advocates against the international accord told The Daily Caller News Foundation that there were many other disadvantages of the deal, including it undermining Trump’s deregulatory efforts.

Cook, and several other tech executives like Tesla’s Elon Musk, disagree with Trump’s choice mainly for environmental reasons (rather than diplomatic ones), saying the accord is critical to help foster the creation of clean energy.
“Climate change is real and we all share a responsibility to fight it,” Cook said in the email. “I want to reassure you that today’s developments will have no impact on Apple’s efforts to protect the environment.”
